If you have ever thought about studying abroad, you cannot deny that the exorbitant cost of tuition fees and living expenses has bothered you at some point in time. The concern is well justified as the cost of international education, especially for students in developing countries like India, has been on the rise. But there are scholarship opportunities that will help you cover your expenses. This is exactly what we bring to you today – scholarships!
Scholarships 101
Scholarships, grants, and fellowships are all generally put under the moniker of scholarships. Scholarships are generally based on your academic performance and potential, but there may be some scholarships that are specific to certain criteria and thus improve your chances of acceptance. Scholarships can be full or partial, and may or may not cover living costs.
Most scholarships are in the form of money paid upfront to you or directly to your institute. You do not have to return the money to the scholarship issuer, which is why scholarships are an easier option vis-a-vis educational loans.
Types of Scholarships
While you may be aware of the fact that university scholarships exist, you may not know that there are ample scholarships available outside of the institute you are applying to. A few categories in which scholarships fall are:
Merit-based Scholarships
These scholarships are based on your past academics and/or test scores. These are the most competitive scholarships to get through.
Need-based Scholarships
Students below a certain level of family income are typically eligible for these scholarships. Academics may be a deciding factor in these scholarships as well.
Demographic-based Scholarships
These are scholarships available to students from a specific age, gender, race, community, locality, medical history, etc.
Career-specific Scholarships
Students who are pursuing a specific stream of education or career may be eligible for these scholarships.
Athletic Scholarships
Talented sportspersons can avail these scholarships but may require them to maintain their athletic achievements as they study.
Destination-specific Scholarships
Several foreign government-aided scholarships are available for students studying in specific countries.
